O-J knew that I have a morbid fascination with steak and I love Gaucho. Before moving to London, I only ever had Sirloin, well-done. The better half only ever has his steak rare and 600grams thank you. I have 250grams, and that’s about all I can eat. Anyway, O-J recommended Hawksmoor – apparently the best steak in London.

Due to the better half’s accident, we couldn’t make reservations immediately and I made the reservation for 22 Feb and that would be his Valentine’s Day gift, seeing as how we couldn’t go out on the day itself.

We got a reservation for half 6 and were promised the table for 2 hours. The verdict – I personally still prefer Gaucho – the steak was a little too dry and the starter of ribs were not much to rave about. The dessert was the only thing I feel was better than the Gaucho dessert – but the dessert itself was not enough to convince me to go back.

Quite an expensive meal (£177) and I was so hopeful that it would live up to it name – sadly not. The ambiance was more high-street and I’m surprised this is a top 100 restaurant in London. I felt the tables were too close together and i could hear exactly what the people next to me were talking about – which made it impossible to actually concentrate on our own conversations!

I had the fillet and the better half had sirloin. On the sides; gorgeous field mushrooms, creamed spinach and beef dripping fries

Was not too impressed with the wine unfortunately - a little too bitter

I loved my dessert of Peanut Butter Shortbread with Salted Caramel Ice Cream and the better half had Sticky Orange Pudding – both lovely

I don’t think we would go back (though I thoroughly enjoyed the dessert) – I still do believe Gaucho is quite possibly the best steak houses out there.
